What is combination skin?
If the skin on your forehead and around your nose (the 'T-zone') is oily while the rest of your face is normal or dry, you have combination skin.
Your skin may be aggravated by changes in the weather, climate, diet, exercise and emotional well-being.
4 tips for effective combination skin care
- Use a gentle cleanser that does not leave skin feeling tight or dry
- Avoid bar soaps or bar cleansers of any kind. The ingredients are always more drying than those used in a gentle soap-free cleansing lotion
- Opt for an alcohol-free, water-based serum containing antioxidants and moisture-binding plant actives
- Treat dry areas (including around the eyes) with a moisturiser containing antioxidants, moisture-binding plant actives and ingredients that mimic the structure and function of healthy skin.
A serum-type product may be all your dry areas need to look and feel better. More extreme dryness will benefit from an antioxidant-rich serum paired with an emollient moisturiser.
Diet for combination skin
- Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables and fresh fruits
- A deficiency of vitamin B2 can cause oily skin. Good sources include brewer's yeast, whole grains, beans and nuts.
- Buckwheat, black beans and whole rice are rich in iron, which can rejuvenate the skin
- Add plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet
- Drink lots of filtered water to both keep your skin hydrated and flush out toxins
- Avoid saturated and hydrogenated fats, fired and highly seasoned foods, soft drinks, alcohol, sugar, chocolate and junk food
