A natural emollient, built-in moisturiser and skin antioxidant, Olive Squalane has so many beauty benefits that we can’t resist using it in lots of our natural and organic beauty products.
Our founder, Charlotte Vøhtz, is passionate about the benefits of Squalane skin care and here we reveal the difference between Squalene and Squalane, and introduce some of the products we use Squalane in.
Looking for ethical Squalane skin products? Squalane can come from a range of sources but as a cruelty-free company Green People only sources its Squalane from olives.

Why does skin need Squalene?
A key function of the skin barrier is to maintain the skin’s hydration levels so that skin feels soft and comfortable.
Healthy skin typically contains 10-13% Squalene but those with dry or eczema-prone skin typically produce lower levels of Squalene.
We also lose Squalene as we age, and this is one reason why skin feels drier, tighter and less flexible after the age of 30.
Squalene vs Squalane
Squalene is not suitable for use in skin care products because it has a tendency to react with other ingredients and a particularly short shelf-life, but there is another way to support your skin’s Squalene levels.
Squalane has a remarkably similar molecular make-up to Squalene. Ideal for use in skin care, the special thing about Squalane is that when applied to the skin, it is converted to Squalene!
What are the skin benefits of Squalane?
Once Squalane touches the skin and forms into Squalene, it can bind itself to moisture found in sweat and the atmosphere and forms a seal on the outer layer of the skin. The benefit of this is that moisture is ‘locked’ into the skin barrier and skin is less prone to dryness.
These properties make Squalane skin care ideal for those with dry skin and those that want to support a strong and healthy skin barrier function.
Other skin care benefits of Squalane include:
- Conditions, moisturises and reduces water loss
- Restores suppleness and elasticity
- Reduces the appearance of wrinkles
- Softens and soothes dry skin
There are also particular Squalane skin benefits for certain skin types.
Squalane moisturiser for eczema-prone skin
Eczema-prone skin requires extra-special care to soothe irritated skin and repair the skin barrier. Packed with natural, skin-balancing benefits, Squalane is an ultra-gentle, anti-inflammatory, natural emollient.
This makes it perfectly placed to calm redness and irritation and the ideal ingredient for eczema or psoriasis-prone skin.
Our recommended eczema-friendly moisturisers with Squalane are our ultra-gentle Scent Free 24-Hour Cream and Scent Free Body Lotion.
Squalane moisturiser for acne-prone skin
Unlike pore-clogging mineral oils, Squalane-based skin care won’t interfere with the skin’s ability to breathe and helps bring oily skin back into balance.
It’s non-comedogenic properties means that as well as being very helpful for dry and eczema-prone skin, its benefits can also be enjoyed by those with acne-prone, combination and oily skin.
Our favourite Squalane moisturiser for acne-prone skin is our Oil Balance Moisturiser, which also features skin-balancing Prebiotics and antibacterial Willow Bark.

Squalane moisturiser for mature skin
Our natural Squalene levels decline with age, and this makes Squalane skin care particularly helpful for delaying the signs of ageing.
It is thought that the amount of Squalene our skin produces decreases from the age of 25 onwards and it can be as low as 5% in skin aged 50 and over.
The effect of this is that mature skin becomes drier, fine lines appear more pronounced and the skin seeks out alternative sources of hydration. The hydrating properties of Squalane are ideal for plumping ageing skin, and making it appear younger.
Our favourite Squalane moisturiser for mature skin is our Age Defy+ Brightening Moisturiser.
Also featuring Beech Bud to boost skin cell metabolism and a complex of Cucumber Seed, White Mulberry Bark and Hibiscus Flower Extract to target hyperpigmentation, this deeply hydrating moisturiser is the perfect choice for meeting the challenges of mature skin.
Age Defy+ Brightening Moisturiser 30ml
Target age spots, fine lines and wrinkles with this hydrating face cream
Premature skin ageing can be exacerbated by sun exposure so, if you are concerned about skin ageing, you should always apply a UV-protective sun cream to your skin before sun exposure.
Our Day Solution SPF15 is an SPF moisturiser with Squalane, perfect for daily skin defence. Its organic, non-greasy formula is perfect for all skin types.
