What are the symptoms of a deodorant allergy? Can deodorant cause an armpit rash? How do you treat a deodorant allergy? Many people have questions about deodorant allergies.

Discover the best deodorant for allergy-prone skin as we guide you through choosing a deodorant for armpits that are easily irritated by deodorant.

What are the symptoms of a deodorant allergy?

Noticed a rash on your underarm? Could it be a deodorant or antiperspirant allergy?

The delicate skin on your underarms is easily irritated and if you are prone to rashes on your armpits, it’s possible that you may be allergic or sensitive to an ingredient in your deodorant or antiperspirant.

We believe that everyone should feel comfortable in their own skin. Discover the symptoms of a deodorant allergy then scroll on for tips on what to do if you are sensitive to deodorant.

  • Itchy, uncomfortable underarms
  • A red rash* around the armpit
  • A stinging sensation around the armpit

*Underarm rashes can also be signs of other conditions. If the rash persists or you become at all concerned about it, it’s best to get it checked out by your GP or pharmacist.

What to do if you have an allergic reaction to deodorant

Unsettled skin needs extra gentle care, and if you’ve had an allergic reaction to deodorant, here is what to do next.

Wash: Gently washing the armpits with cool water will rinse the irritant from your skin while also cooling the affected area. Inflamed skin is easily irritated so avoid applying any personal care products until the rash has subsided. This includes drying soaps, body washes and foaming shaving products.

Wait: Monitor the skin rash and seek medical advice if it persists or you are worried. If your rash does not fade it is best to get your GP or pharmacist to take a look at it.

Switch: Once the rash has calmed, switch to a gentle deodorant that’s formulated to help repair your skin barrier. Designed to nurture a strong skin barrier, Green People’s natural and organic deodorants use a skin-kind Shea Butter and Aloe Vera base alongside soothing, protective Prebiotics.

“Very good product. I had previously developed a severe allergic reaction to my usual product, but this did not irritate my skin at all.” Vicky C

“I have been using this product for the last four weeks after developing a reaction to a product I had been using for years. Since changing to the Green People deodorant, my rash has disappeared. This is a gentle, and also, a very effective deodorant.” Shelagh

What can cause deodorant rash?

Now that you’ve calmed your armpit rash, you’ll want to stop it from appearing again

Unfortunately, not all deodorants are as skin-friendly as they seem. Some can contain drying ingredients and allergens which can irritate delicate skin, leading to a deodorant rash. These include:

  • Skin-drying ethyl alcohol (ethanol)
  • Synthetic fragrance
  • Lanolin
  • Aluminium chloride
  • Parabens
  • Gluten

Experts in sensitive skin, we refuse to use these in any of our natural and organic deodorants.

Instead of pore-clogging Aluminium Chloride, we use skin-safe Alum. A much larger molecule, Alum is too large to be absorbed through the skin and trigger irritation. Instead, it sits on the skin’s surface, where it works to stop sweaty odours from multiplying. Read more about Alum.

We scent our deodorants with pure and natural essential oils, rather than artificial fragrance. Most skin types can tolerate these but if your skin is very sensitive or you have a fragrance allergy, you should choose our Scent Free Deodorant – our very gentlest deodorant.
