Why is my teenage hair greasy after washing? What's the best shampoo for a 13-year-old with greasy hair? Greasy hair is part of puberty and if your teenager is asking why their hair is so oily, we can help you to ease their concerns.

In this post, we explain why teen hair is so prone to being oily, share our top tips on how to stop greasy hair and recommend our favourite shampoo for teenage greasy hair.

Why is my teen's hair so greasy?

Is your teen's hair oily? Greasy hair is a curse of puberty triggered by hormonal shifts. Most teens will find that their teenage hair gets greasier faster thanks to an increase in the amount of sebum (oil) being produced by the sebaceous glands on their scalp, which is then transferred to their hair.

Really, sebum is good stuff, protecting your scalp from damage, but too much of it means you end up with waxy-feeling hair and a slick, greasy hair style.

The good news? Once you’re past puberty, things tend to balance out. In the meantime, frequently washing with a shampoo for oily teenage hair is the perfect thing to see teens with greasy hair through their school days. More about that in the next section.

Our best shampoo for teenage greasy hair

Our Irritated Scalp Shampoo and Conditioner are must-have products for teens with greasy hair.

There’s no drying alcohol or harsh foaming agents here. We refuse to use these as they can strip the scalp of its protective oils, causing it to produce more oil to counterbalance the deficit!

Instead, we make this natural shampoo for teens with oily hair with organic Rosemary Leaf Oil, Pineapple Extract and soothing Yucca, which counter oiliness, helping to bring your hair back into balance.

Dandruff and itchiness can occur alongside greasy hair, but Irritated Scalp shampoo stimulates the scalp to help keep teen scalps flake-free.

Our Irritated Scalp Conditioner gives natural shine, without causing build-up. This silicone-free conditioner is rich in gloss-giving Quinoa Protein and strengthening B vitamins. It’s the perfect partner to our shampoo and you only need a little!

5 tips for stopping teenage greasy hair

Tuck hair back: Teenagers who repeatedly brush and twirl their hair can find that it gets greasier faster. That’s because oil from their hands transfers onto it. To help them resist the need to twirl, encourage them to tuck it in a bun or a ponytail.

Wash oily teen hair regularly: The key to keeping teenage oily hair feeling fresh is thoroughly washing it on a regular basis. Teens with short oily hair may prefer to wash their hair daily using a gentle balancing shampoo.

If your teen has long, oily hair that’s a hassle to dry and style, encourage them to washing their hair every other day. They should shampoo and rinse twice, which ensures that their hair has been thoroughly cleansed so that it looks and feels fresher for longer.

Condition oily teen hair at the ends only: Avoid silicone-laden hair products that are hard to wash out and encourage your teen to apply a natural conditioner to the lengths of their hair only. This should then be rinsed thoroughly.

Lower the temperature: Scorching hot showers can dry out teen scalps, causing them to produce more oil. For healthy, non-greasy hair encourage them to keep their water temperature cool and their shower length short.

Clean oily hair brushes: Falling oily hair can soon fill up your teen’s hairbrush, meaning your teen is brushing oil onto their hair. To avoid this, clean hair from their brushes regularly and encourage them to give their comb a quick shampoo every once in a while.
