What types of alcohol are used in skin care?

Let’s start with some skin care chemistry. When you think of the word 'alcohol' you might associate it with ethanol, the liquid used to make alcoholic drinks.

Indeed, ethanol can be used to give skin care products a light skin feel but, in chemistry terms, the word 'alcohol' actually describes a vast range of compounds that all have one thing in common; they all contain an oxygen/hydrogen pairing at one end of their molecule.

Some alcohols that are used in beauty products are good for skin health and tocopherol (Vitamin E) and retinol (Vitamin A) are both great examples of skin-compatible alcohols that are used in beauty products.

Cetaryl alcohol is another skin-friendly alcohol. This fatty alcohol is derived from Coconut and used in our hair care products for its nourishing effects. We also use Arachidyl alcohol to help our natural shampoo bars create a gentle foam that is suitable for use on sensitive scalps.

Other alcohols, such as ethanol, can have skin-drying effects and may not be suitable for all skin types. More about that later.

Green People’s alcohol-free beauty products

Green People natural and organic beauty products are alcohol free, pH balanced and formulated plant actives that nurture a strong and healthy skin barrier.

When Green People refers to its products as ‘alcohol-free’, it means they do not contain skin-drying alcohols such as ethanol/ethyl alcohol and alcohol denat.

As experts in sensitive skin, we choose not to use these ingredients because we consider them to have the potential to strip the skin barrier of its proactive oils as they evaporate. This can contribute to dryness and imbalance; two known causes of sensitive skin.

Should I use alcohol-free skin care?

Alcohol-free skin care can benefit all skin types and could help your skin to feel healthy and balanced.

If you have sensitive, dry or damaged skin you might find that your skin feels more comfortable when using non-drying, non-irritating beauty products that are alcohol-free.

If your skin feels dry after the menopause or you have rosacea you may also feel the benefits of switching to alcohol-free skin care.

It may also surprise you to know that alcohol-free skin care is a great choice for oily skin that’s prone to spots. That’s because if skin becomes too dry because of an overuse of drying skin care alcohols, it may start to overproduce oils that attract acne bacteria.

Alcohol-free moisturisers

Rich in moisture-binding actives, they are suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin and those prone to eczema.

Alcohol-free sunscreens

All our sun care products are alcohol-free (no ethyl alcohol/ethanol) and that includes our everyday SPF facial sun creams.

To ensure our sunscreens are suitable for those that are prone to eczema or prickly heat, we also offer unscented, alcohol-free sunscreens that feature no added fragrance or essential oils.

Our best-selling sun cream collection also covers alcohol-free sunscreens (no ethyl alcohol/ethanol) for your body.

Alcohol-free serums

Serums have replaced toners in our beauty routines and if you are looking for an alcohol-free toner, why not try our pH-balanced serums?

Lighter than moisturiser, our alcohol-free serums (no ethyl alcohol/ethanol) plump the skin with moisture-binding actives such as Hyaluronic Acid and are ideal for sandwiching an extra layer into mature skin that’s prone to dryness.

Alcohol-free face wash

If you ever experience an uncomfortable ‘tight’ feeling after washing your face, chances are your face wash contains ingredients that are not compatible with your skin’s pH.

Green People’s alcohol-free cleansers (no ethyl alcohol/ethanol) are formulated to gently remove impurities without stripping skin of its natural, healthy oils.

Try our Scent Free Cleanser or, for oily or acne-prone skin, try the Foaming Face Wash, which contains balancing, spot-fighting actives including Green Tea and Willow Bark.

Alcohol-free deodorant

The quick-drying action of ethanol alcohols means that they are often added to antiperspirants. If you find that antiperspirant stings your skin, give our alcohol-free deodorants (no ethyl alcohol/ethanol) a try.

We offer seven roll-on deodorants to choose from; all of which use the three way action of Prebiotics, Alum and Zinc Ricinoleate to keep underarms feeling fresh and fragrant.
