Does your mood dip during the winter? You’re not alone. Cold snaps and a shortage of sunshine hours leave many of us feeling low and lethargic during UK winters. For some, this manifests as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which affects as many as 1.6 million people in the UK[i].

While long spells of low mood should always be discussed with your GP, we’ve got some great winter wellbeing tips and natural wellbeing products you can use to help support your mental health this winter.

Let the sunshine in

A lack of sunshine hours during the winter can leave us feeling sluggish but making the most of winter sunshine can help your body stimulate the happiness hormone serotonin.

Our first winter mood boost tip is to embrace an early start and begin the day with a winter walk in nature or a gentle jog. Keep your skin cosy and protected with an SPF15 day cream, and trust us, the winter sunrises will make the early start all worth it.

Scent your day

Add a few drops of Time to Smile to our Time to Inhale Diffuser and mist its feel-good scent around your home and when you are on-the-go.

“Love this little gadget - it provides me with some freshness and calm during a busy day.” Lucia

Time to Smile is bursting with 9 natural and organic notes that have been expertly blended to bring an energising citrus zing to every morning. We’ve been told it is like happiness in a bottle!

This oil has a beautiful, stimulating, fresh smell. I use it to scent my bedroom and love sniffing it. Makes me think of happy summer days.” Rosemary

Mood-boost your shower

The aroma of your natural beauty products is another way to give yourself a boost. If you struggle to get going on a dark winter’s day, add an uplifting aroma to your winter shower and skin care routine.

The zesty ginger notes of our Protein-Boost Shampoo & Body Wash are a great way to energise your day and keep your skin and hair feeling fresh long after you step out of the shower.

Feed your mood

Winter is the perfect time to get cosy, so tuck into a wholesome dose of comfort food.

Serotonin-rich foods such as chicken, tofu, and fish can help stave off sluggish feelings, meaning that a soothing bowl of chicken soup will bring you a natural winter mood boost.

Can we tempt your tastebuds with silky hot chocolate? Cocoa is also thought to contain serotonin – the trigger for the happiness hormone.

Take time for self care

It's easy to feel overwhelmed during winter, especially in the social media age. An easy way to protect your mental health in winter is to stop doom scrolling and put away your phone.

Once you unplug, you’ll find that you have so much more me time and can make more time for more mindful activities such as crafting, journaling or reading.

Skin care is self-care, too, so grab your Gua Sha and treat your mind and body to a relaxing home facial.

Keep moving

It's hard to find the motivation to go to the gym on a winter night, and in the UK, many women don’t feel safe running in the dark, but don’t let that put your winter workout routine on pause!

It's well known that exercise benefits mental health and your body, and YouTube is a rich resource of home workout tutorials.

Yoga is our favourite home workout for winter, and you can create the relaxing aroma of the yoga studio by popping a few drops of Time to Relax Pure Essential Oil onto an aroma bead bracelet and inhaling it as you downward dog.

“Lovely aroma to put on the bracelet to wear during the day, useful for yoga or just general relaxation.” Christine

Sleep well

It’s much harder to manage life's stresses when you have not had enough sleep, so make the most of the early evenings to rest and recharge.

To help you switch off, scent your pillow with Time to Sleep. Our favourite winter sleep oil, this dreamy sleep scent blends Vetivert with Bergamot and Lavender and sends us to sleep like no other.

“This is a wonderful products the fragrance is amazing but I feel relaxed and settled when I go to bed. I’m sure it helps me to get a better nights sleep.” Anne

We hope that our winter mood boosters have made you smile today. If winter is affecting your mental health, we encourage you to talk to your GP or one of the fantastic UK mental health charities, such as Mind, which has some great resources on how to access emotional health support.
